The Rideau Canal was built from 1826-1832 as a safe passage from the Ottawa River to the St. Lawrence River. Today the Rideau Canal is one of Ottawa’s most historic and famous attractions. In 2007 it became Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now residents and tourists from all over the world come to the canal to see an engineering marvel and enjoy its year-round recreational activities.
In the winter the Rideau Canal becomes the world’s largest skating rink and the in summer the canal becomes a haven for boat cruises, walks and bike rides along its path.
The first Rideau Canal Festival was launched in 2008 during August long-weekend driven by the communities desire to celebrate it World Heritage site. The Rideau Canal Festival is also known for its “Aim-for-Zero Footprint” commitment of zero carbon emissions and zero waste throughout the 5 day festival.
Not only have we added an extra day to the Festival this year, there is new activities and entertainment for everyone! Start off your Rideau Canal Festival celebrations at the Bytown Museum/Ottawa Locks, Confederation Park, or Dows Lake Pavilion.
